Stephen's bio

Stephen Richards is a Regional Partner and co-owner at Gillespies, and a leading landscape architect with over 30 years of award-winning international experience. His intelligent, site-responsive design approach creates meaningful, high-performing external and internal landscapes that harmonise with architecture, reflect the character of their setting, and operate in balance with the systems that govern the natural world.

A passionate advocate for landscape-led development and biophilic design, Stephen champions approaches that promote sustainable urban design and healthier environments. His work supports a resilient and adaptive urban ecology through strategies such as water conservation, active travel integration, climate-responsive microclimates, and the efficient use of land and materials. He has been instrumental in shaping nature-led residential and commercial developments across the UK that prioritise human wellbeing, biodiversity, and long-term environmental performance.

Stephen’s design philosophy is evident in landmark projects including the RIBA Stirling Prize-shortlisted NEO Bankside in London, the iconic Macallan Distillery in Speyside, Scotland, the new expansive roof at Google Headquarters in King's Cross and the reimagining of the St Helier Waterfront in Jersey, all of which demonstrate how thoughtful landscape architecture can enrich place, ecology, and create meaningful experiences.

Stephen is based in Gillespies' London studio and, in his role as Regional Partner, also oversees the operations of the Oxford studio.
