Wirral's Port Sunlight River Park to be enlarged
Ahead of its completion in summer 2014, it has been announced that Port Sunlight River Park, designed by Gillespies and situated next to the village of Port Sunlight, will see an extra 8 hectares added to its area, donated by Unilever.
Work on the River Park is progressing with the main site due to open in summer 2014 at which point work will begin on creating the southern access routes. The Park will be part of the Wirral coastal path and this new section will give access to the River Mersey and views of the Liverpool skyline for the first time in over 20 years.
Warren Chapman, Associate in Gillespies' Manchester studio, comments:
"The new park is transforming this part of Mersey Coastline. Our designs for Port Sunlight River Park have a strong emphasis on access to nature, incorporating wildlife habitats such as a wildflower walk and a wetland area. The park's design will offer people a new leisure destination, and provide the perfect setting from which to enjoy a great view of the city of Liverpool".
Gillespies is leading the design team. The transformation of this part of the Wirral Peninsula is possible due to funding made available via the Newlands programme and from the site owners Biffa. The restoration work to ensure the vision for Port Sunlight River Park becomes a reality is being managed by the Land Trust and the delivery partners. Website: http://portsunlightriverpark.c...
