An attractive new landscape setting for GlaxoSmithKline’s European Research Headquarters in Stevenage, one of the most prestigious business environments anywhere in the UK.
The landscape‑led approach for the Glaxo Research Campus maximises the quality of open spaces within the development through a series of landscape interventions, which enhance connectivity and promote communication, interaction and knowledge transfer across the campus.
The new contemporary landscapes frame the existing research buildings by interpreting their contours and colours in the parklands, lawns, stone-work and water features.
Water is used extensively in the design and includes a large lake, which creates an imposing entrance to the facility. This issues from a source in a central courtyard — a ‘river of life’ — which became the inspiration for a series of interpreted themes. These include cascading waterfalls around a series of terraces, and a ribbon of fast flowing water which engages with the restaurant and café facilities at the heart of the campus.
