Al Ula MP2 Masterplan

Preserving heritage while shaping a sustainable future for Al Ula

Al Ula, Saudi Arabia

Illustrative masterplan for Al Ula in Saudi Arabia

Building on our 2018 work on Al Ula’s 22,300 km² Regional Framework Plan, Gillespies was appointed in 2020 to lead MP2, a key Masterplan component in one of the site’s four study areas within this UNESCO World Heritage destination.

Redefining Saudi Arabia as a global tourism destination

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 champions a vibrant society, thriving economy, and ambitious nation—key drivers behind Al Ula’s rise as a premier regional tourism hub, alongside the Red Sea, Amaala, and NEOM (all shaped by Gillespies). By 2035, Al Ula is set to welcome 2 million tourists, captivated by its breathtaking landscapes, iconic rock formations, and the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Hegra.

A thriving future for Al Ula

MP2 lies at the heart of Al Ula, comprising three distinct urban communities, each shaped by its unique landscape: Central (East and West) – the most complete, South – the largest and most substantial, and a rural outskirts area with organic streets and traditional architecture. The masterplan embraces these differences, guiding each settlement’s development with a clear function and strong sense of place.

Blending contemporary Arabic planning with heritage, MP2 integrates vibrant open spaces, authentic streetscapes, and essential amenities—housing, education, employment, culture, and worship—ensuring a high quality of life. A unifying landscape strategy, featuring an Urban Oasis and Wadi Renaturalisation project, forms the city’s natural backbone. While rooted in history, MP2 is designed for a thriving, sustainable future.
