Croydon's Queen's Gardens and Taberner House get the go ahead

Planning permission has been granted for Taberner House and adjacent Queen's Gardens in Croydon.

The proposal for a high quality, sustainable development will deliver the aspirations of the Mid-Croydon Masterplan and the Opportunity and Area Planning Framework (OAPF) on behalf of the Croydon Council Urban Regeneration Vehicle (CCURV).

The residential scheme designed by Make will provide around 420 new homes and also deliver a striking redesigned public by Gillespies, called The Queen's Gardens.

Sheena Bell, Associate at Gillespies is leading the public realm design team. The redesign of The Queen's Gardens is an important element of this scheme. The Queen's Gardens are highly valued by the people of Croydon as an oasis of calm in the busy town centre and their redesign will be an important focus for public life.

The enhancements to Queen's Gardens build on the principles established in the Mid Croydon Masterplan to both upgrade and extend them. They seek to enhance and protect existing valuable features, whilst sensitively adapting the gardens.  The redesigned gardens also address issues such as poor connectivity to surrounding areas and safety, and will provide a range of additional facilities for the public.

The new design for The Queen's Gardens will create a high quality park to meet the needs of the growing town centre into the future.

The re-development of the site is expected to begin in December 2014.
