Bournemouth seafront's vision revealed

A long-term plan for Bournemouth's award winning seafront is under consideration by Bournemouth Borough Council. Gillespies was commissioned to provide a Seafront Strategy, covering 5.5 miles of sandy beach on the south coast of England.

The innovative plan which has been developed over the past year in consultation with a range of groups and organisations with a keen interest in the seafront, proposes sympathetic development of the area from Alum Chine to Southbourne. Over 90 potential projects have been identified for the 20-year programme to further enhance the town's world-class seafront.

The projects are grouped into activities to best fit with the different geographical and commercial environments along the coastal area: The Chines, Central Beach, the Coastal Activity Park at Meyrick Steps/Boscombe and Boscombe to Southbourne. Any development is set to enhance the natural assets of the coastline, and be environmentally and economically sustainable.

Much of the current seafront infrastructure dates back to over 50, and in some cases a 100, years and was designed to meet visitor needs and expectations of earlier generations. As well as providing enhanced facilities for local people to enjoy, the new Seafront Strategy will help to secure and grow Bournemouth's 462m GBP tourism sector.
