New London Architecture Shortlist Revealed

Three projects where Gillespies has delivered landscape and public realm design have made this year’s New London Awards shortlist. The NLA awards recognise the very best projects in the capital that make a significant contribution to placemaking, improve the usability of London’s streets and public spaces, and seek to deliver a more sustainable city.

Hammersmith and Fulham Civic Campus, the regeneration of West King Street and the Grade II-listed Hammersmith Town Hall into a new high quality civic mixed-use development, has been shortlisted for the Mixing award; while Sayer Street and Bankside Yards, both in Southwark, have been shortlisted for the Placemaking award.

Gillespies are delivering a significant public realm for Hammersmith and Fulham Civic Campus, which includes a new civic square, streetscapes, play areas, residential gardens and a new courtyard, as well as roof terraces for the town hall. The new public realm improvements will enhance the setting of the existing Grade II Listed Town Hall, reinstating its presence on Kings Street, as well as providing new green spaces for the community to enjoy.

At Bankside Yards, a major residential-led mixed-use development for client Native Land, we have delivered a significant and vibrant public realm that will open up this previously inaccessible part of central London to Londoners for the first time in 100 years. At the centre of this development is the restoration of the rail viaduct which includes a distinct row of arches that are set to be transformed into cultural and retail amenities, offering a vibrant and creative destination for the Southwark community, Londoners, and tourists alike.

Sayer Street is a vibrant new retail destination as part of Lendlease’s major Elephant Park development in Southwark. Gillespies designed the streetscape and BD Landscape have created a temporary meadow and series of pavilions that will animate the place whilst construction. Gillespies are also the landscape masterplanner for the entire Elephant Park development, which will create a vibrant and sustainable residential-led mixed-use development that aims to set a new standard in green city living.
