Plans submitted for first phase of Heygate Estate
Part of the 1.5bn GBP regeneration of Elephant and Castle in South London, this first phase of the Heygate development by Lend Lease ("MP1") ranges from three-storey houses to a 16-storey tower.
The detailed application for MP1 comes after Lend Lease received outline planning consent from Southwark Council earlier this year. It is planned for a total of 2,500 new homes will be built on the site during the next 15 years.
Gillespies is the public realm designer for MP1 and also the public realm masterplanner for the overall development of the Heygate Estate.
A cornerstone of the overall public realm design strategy for the site is the retention of as many of the existing trees as possible, and also the planting of new trees. In MP1, Gillespies has managed to ensure that more trees are being saved than was originally envisaged at the outline planning stage.
Architects for MP1 are Maccreanor Lavington Architects, public realm design is by Gillespies.
A planning decision for MP1 is expected in early 2014.
