A phased, high-quality public realm for a new mixed-use community and business quarter in the heart of Leeds City Centre.
The public realm design for Wellington Place forms a key part of a new, BREEAM 'Excellent' Grade A office complex at the heart of the prestigious Wellington Place development in Leeds City Centre. The public realm will help to identify Leeds as a business destination of choice and is a cornerstone in the city’s regeneration.
Gillespies’ role has been to develop a coherent masterplan into a series of detailed planning applications for the public realm areas around a phased development process.
The overall vision is to create a vibrant, safe and distinctive new urban quarter for Leeds, a vibrant community where people will want to live, work and play.
Working closely with CJCT and Shepard Robson Architects, Gillespies have successfully undertaken the masterplan vision, developed the sites historic themes and created a design with a rich ‘sense of place’ providing an attractive and restful environment for workers and visitors alike. The public realm reflects the former railway use of the site and focuses on the Listed Lifting Tower, which now forms the centre piece of the new Tower Square.
Gillespies has overseen the successful planning applications and subsequent construction of all of the phases of the development since 2008, and have acted as custodians of the quality and coherence of public realm on behalf of MEPC.
