Gateshead Council appointed gillespies to prepare a spatial framework and design code for a cluster of new sustainable urban communities next to the River Tyne that will deliver a network of high-quality green and blue spaces with active travel routes linking with the surrounding area.

The proposed framework will deliver a thriving new neighbourhood where people will want to live, work and visit. Contemporary and sustainable high-quality buildings positioned within green and walkable neighbourhoods will deliver a place with a distinct character, building on the area’s natural assets and opening up access to the river, surrounding countryside, public transport and nearby facilities and services. The design code draws reference from the recently released National Model Design Code and supplements the plans and spatial framework in guiding future developments to come. It includes key design principles such as Character, Urban Form, Homes, Open Space, and Parking and Accessibility.
