Ealing, London, UK

Gillespies, working with a team led by masterplanners Prior and Partners, is delivering landscape design to support Ealing Council in shaping a new Regional Park, an ambitious plan to create a vibrant natural, cultural and recreational hub for the borough and wider west London.

The project builds on the borough’s commitment to tackling climate change, boosting biodiversity, and opening up equitable access to high-quality green space. It puts nature and communities at the heart of a green recovery, supporting locally led economic regeneration that is good for nature, climate and people.

Under the London Plan, regional parks are expected to serve an indicative catchment of around 8 km. Ealing’s Regional Park will span about 575 hectares in total, with roughly 460 hectares accessible, serving neighbourhoods across the borough and acting as a destination for communities throughout west London

The proposed Regional Park is a large, connected landscape linking existing open spaces along the River Brent from Horsenden Hill in the north to Warren Farm in the south, tying into a wider cross-borough green network. It will offer opportunities for nature conservation, leisure, sport and community activity.

The vision is for Ealing Regional Park to flourish as a collection of diverse and complementary spaces that are linked and connected both for people - via a new Regional Park Trail, a pedestrian and cycle connection that runs the length of the park - and ecologically, by natural corridors and landscape. The core concept is for the park to be punctuated by four focal areas: the most active destinations, connected by the Regional Park Trail. The vision for the park includes:

  • Greener, healthier spaces – expanding woodland, wetland, and meadows to boost biodiversity and improve air and water quality
  • Better connections for walking and cycling – creating new and improved pathways that link local communities to the park- Overcoming barriers for access and creating a branded Regional Park Trail.
  • Creating focal points of activity which build on existing facilities and assets, creating gateways and destinations in the park for culture, play, sport and community events at Warren Farm, Churchfields, Perivale Park and Horsenden Hill
  • Improved flood resilience – managing the River Brent corridor to enhance water quality and reduce flood risks

The vision and concept plan were developed in collaboration with Ealing Council, local and regional stakeholders and the community. The commission also produced a management framework, set priorities and phasing, and informed the Council’s business case.
