Beijing New International Airport
Creating a distinctive cultural landmark for the city that celebrates the spirit of travel and connectivity
Beijing
Gillespies collaborated with RSHP on the design of a world-class, multi-modal transport hub in Beijing, setting a new benchmark for integrated urban mobility.
Gillespies took part in an invited competition with RSHP for the design of Beijing New International Airport. The highly distinctive architectural form evolved around key principles of ease of movement and wayfinding as well as creation of a cultural landmark. Priority was given to sustainable public transport modes for connections between the airport, the city and the wider Beijing region.
Gillespies worked on a terminal foreground where civic gardens provide a welcoming and vibrant public space for all airport users and the local community; and a masterplan to maximise long-term development flexibility and provide the best response to air traffic growth in an unpredictable industry.
