William (Bill) Basterfield is an Associate Partner at Gillespies’ Oxford studio and a chartered landscape architect with more than 20 years’ experience in landscape architecture, wayfinding design, and architectural signage systems. His international portfolio spans the UK, Cyprus, India and the Middle East, covering urban townscapes, retail destinations, leisure developments, civic squares, public realm masterplans, heritage landscapes and large-scale resorts.
Bill combines his expertise in landscape architecture and environmental design with strategic wayfinding consultancy to create places that are intuitive, engaging and memorable. By integrating architectural signage, public realm design and landscape strategy, he delivers cohesive environments where navigation, identity, and user experience are seamlessly connected.
He has extensive experience in the design and delivery of luxury resorts in India, Cyprus and the Middle East, where his integrated approach to resort landscapes and wayfinding systems ensures guests can move effortlessly through complex environments while enjoying distinctive, memorable landscapes.
Bill’s wider signage and wayfinding portfolio includes high-traffic environments such as business parks, visitor attractions, cultural destinations, public spaces, universities, and healthcare facilities. This expertise has honed his ability to create effective wayfinding systems that address complex navigation needs and improve accessibility for all users. Notable projects include signage for a new community in North West Cambridge, Red Sea Airport, the Thames Tideway and The Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi.
