The Piece Hall in Halifax wins top award at The Historic England Angel Awards

The Grade I listed Piece Hall in Halifax was named the first ever UK Overall Winner at The Historic England Angel Awards. The project also picked up the award for ‘Best Rescue of a Historic Building’. Founded by Andrew Lloyd Webber and co-funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, these awards celebrate and reward the efforts of people taking action to champion their local heritage.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, said “I am especially pleased that we have crowned The Piece Hall in Halifax as the overall UK winner. This stunning example of urban renewal should spur on the councils of every major city and town in Britain to do something similar. It is as if St. Mark's Square in Venice has been deposited in West Yorkshire and puts Halifax on a par with major cities in Europe. The only word I can use to describe it is inspirational.”

The Piece Hall has undergone a multi-million-pound restoration programme that has transformed the grade I listed northern cloth halls into a landmark visitor destination. LDN architects have restored the building and Gillespies have significantly improved and restored the quality of the three existing gateways, introduced a new gateway to the east, and have reimagined the central courtyard into a vibrant “town square” and all-season events space.
