The Piece Hall in Halifax triumphs at 2018 RIBA Yorkshire Awards

The Piece Hall in Halifax picked up three accolades at last night’s RIBA Yorkshire Awards, the most of any project. The development, which involved the transformation and restoration of the Grade 1-listed 18th century cloth hall, was among seven RIBA Regional Awards winners.

The Piece Hall scooped a RIBA Yorkshire Award, as well as two special category prizes including the Conservation Award and Building of the Year!

Gillespies’ sensitive revamp of the central courtyard and public realm has created an open, attractive and dynamic space that now houses The Piece Hall Trust’s year-round programme of events. Earlier this month, the courtyard hosted the departure for the fourth stage of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Feature steps, fountains, bespoke furniture and lighting all contribute to the contemporary design language which is sensitive and restrained, to enhance the impressive architectural features and materials of the classical building. The expressive lighting design redefines the public space and establishes The Piece Hall as one of the town’s most exciting night time destinations.
