The Park at Elephant Park wins a silver WAN award

We're delighted to have won a silver award in the 2022 World International News (WAN) awards Urban Landscape category.

The award aims to recognise designs that respond to and enhance the urban environment by creating engaging, meaningful places. The judges looked for projects that "engage with and enhance surrounding buildings and local community".

The gold award went to Eleftheria Square in Cyprus by Zaha Hadid Architects, while Tank Park in New Zealand by LandLAB won bronze.

Also shortlisted were

  • Harvard University District Energy Facility in the United States by Leers Weinzapfel Associates
  • Shenzhen Buji Water Park Landscape Design in China by Shenzhen Hope Design Co Ltd
  • Shenzhen Civil Code Park in China by PMA (PolyMorphArchitects)

Congratulations and thank you to the team: Stephen Richards, Armel Mourgue, Neil Matthew, Patrick Conn, Giacomo Guzzon and Busra Yilmaz.

The park is the centrepiece of Elephant Park, the revitalisation of Elephant & Castle by Lendlease and Southwark Council. It's a two-acre inclusive and sustainable community space with lawns, rain gardens, walkways and a spectacular water playscape, Elephant Springs.

The park is shaped around 27 mature trees and a further 19 new trees, chosen for resilience to climate change, and ecological value. The rain gardens help to manage rainwater: surface water runs off from paved areas into an underground aquifer rather than overburdening London’s sewer system. Pedestrian and cycle routes connect the park to the surrounding areas and the transport network, encouraging green, sustainable methods of travel to and from the area.

This is yet another award for the park at Elephant Park. Others are ROSPA Play Safety Awards for Publicly Accessible Playgrounds, Developer Magazine Pineapple Awards - Public Space of the Year, and is shortlisted for the AJ Landscape Project of the Year award.
