Guisborough Levelling Up Fund bid success

Guisborough has been awarded over £15 million for a range of projects aimed at promoting regeneration and accessibility in and around the town centre.

The scheme will transform two central streets into high-quality spaces for pedestrians, with a string of parklets and flexible spaces to encourage events and activities.

Gillespies led the landscape design and masterplan, working closely with client Cushman & Wakefield and the wider project team to put together the successful bid.

Key elements of the design include a review of the existing road width and parking spaces to create space for soft landscaping, and flexible zones for stalls on market days. An upgrade to the road and pavement surfacing will preserve and enhance the character of the Conservation Area within the town centre. Feature lighting along both streets will encourage safe use of the spaces at night.

Further interventions include:

  • Environmental improvements to Chapel Beck which runs through the town
  • Skate facilities and other improvements within a local park
  • Upgrades to the wider active travel network
  • Improvements to the Guisborough Forest Walkway and Visitor Centre.

The projects will dramatically improve the area for local residents and those visiting this key gateway to the North York Moors National Park.
