Gillespies chosen for new public realm at St John’s Manchester, the former ITV and Granada Studios

Gillespies has been selected to design the new public realm for the redevelopment of St John's Manchester, a new established neighbourhood on the site of the former ITV and Granada Studios.

The 25-acre masterplan for Manchester Quays Limited - a joint venture between Allied London and Manchester City Council - is located between the Castlefield district and Spinningfields business quarter - an area surrounded by heritage assets such as MOSI and St. John's Street Conservation Area.

The proposed design for the public realm celebrates the areas rich industrial heritage by layering the public realm with texture, interest, cultural and historical reference, delivering a framework of streets, squares, courtyards, parks, gardens and sky gardens - both at street and higher levels - that will create multi-level interest and activity.

Our role includes collaborating with site masterplanners SimpsonHaugh and Partners to develop the public realm masterplan and with a number of architectural practices on individual sites. This collaboration allows us to think comprehensively and deliver a unified, yet diverse public realm for St John's.
