Rochdale Town Square progress
About 50% of Rochdale Town Square has now been handed over to Rochdale Council.
After two years of construction, the site hoardings have been pulled back to open half of the scheme to the public. The local authority events team is planning a full programme of events to realise the new town hall square's full potential.
Gillespies designed the new town square, which is being transformed to complement the lottery-supported restoration of the Grade I listed Rochdale Town Hall. The area has been transformed from a car park into a high-quality public plaza, with beautiful benches designed by Broadbent Studio and created by Darwen Terracotta, offering visitors a chance to meet and relax under the new trees.
Rochdale Town Hall and Town Hall Square are being developed with the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Rochdale Borough Council. The project is being delivered by Rochdale Development Agency on behalf of Rochdale Borough Council.
The area in front of the town hall, once a car park, will provide locals and visitors with quality outdoor space to enjoy all year round. Contractors H H Smith have installed new paving, trees and benches which have transformed the area on the Packer Street side of the town hall.
