Gardens for Leicester Cathedral reach new construction milestone

It has been a special week for Leicester Cathedral as the first porphyry paving slab was laid for the new cathedral gardens that have been designed by Gillespies.

The new square and gardens adjacent to Leicester Cathedral promise to become a renewed source of civic and cultural pride for the city.

The design brief to create a welcoming new city-space, of stunning quality with historical and spiritual significance, has led to the design of a flexible space that unifies all the surrounding buildings and firmly ties into the rich historic fabric of Leicester city centre.

Work on the GBP2.5million project began back in November 2013, and when complete it is hoped that the gardens will provide an attractive new public space which will be large enough to hold outdoor events with gathering space for up to 800 people for outdoor services, concerts and public events.

The gardens are planned to be finished by early June with a formal opening held on Saturday 5th July 2014.
