A masterplan to transform the former Peek Freans Biscuit Factory site in Bermondsey into a residential-led mixed-use scheme, centred around a bold new park and a series of green courtyards.
The Biscuit Factory is an exciting new residential, commercial and retail quarter on the site of the old Peek Frean Factory — the factory famous for the supply of bourbon biscuits to Britain.
The 10-acre masterplan, designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), will provide 800 new homes — both affordable and market. These are set within a series of articulated courtyard blocks that face onto a new 80-metre central park space, activated by a series of retail and commercial spaces and a cafe.
The public realm seeks to provide a series of streets, accessible courtyards and open spaces that work to connect this site and interface with the railway viaduct. Once complete, this will be a thriving residential and business location, providing Southwark with its largest hub for small and growing businesses.
The design of the development has drawn inspiration from the area's rich industrial heritage/ It has incorporated some of the original warehouses that will be refurbished and re-established within the site.
The new park's landscaping makes a playful reference to the site's former use as a biscuit factory, by establishing a grid of 'biscuits' made up of various planting designs, held together by a dense framework of mature tree planting.
