Maida Hill Place

The scope of this project aimed to encourage the use of the square for special events and regular markets, tackle crime and disorder issues and establish the space as a high quality ‘gateway’ to the local area.

Opportunities were identified for establishing a larger public space by pedestrianising minor roads and adopting one cohesive palette of materials to extend across this newly acquired public realm.

An extensive consultation process was undertaken involving local community groups and key stakeholders. The completed scheme provides a pedestrian retreat from the heavily trafficked Harrow Road with a new ‘grove’ of trees, connecting to the existing green framework of the surrounding residential streets of Maida Vale.

The scheme supports a wide variety of uses, offering a canvas on which different activities can be accommodated whilst organizing furniture and services and, providing opportunities for an ongoing community arts program.

The regular Maida Hill market held at Prince of Wales square is a vibrant local market and has proved to be a popular meeting place at the heart of the community.
