View project intro

Gillespies has supported Arup in developing a set of Masterplan Frameworks and Design Codes in Barnsley, helping to meet the objectives of the recently adopted Local Plan. The proposals will create sustainable developments across the two sites, integrating these schemes within the surrounding landscape, communities and character of Hoyland and Royston. The documents provide specific guidelines that will underpin future planning applications across the two sites, with the view to bring forward new developments of significant quality that will support economic growth across Barnsley.

Combined, the framework determines a diverse range of sustainable new housing that follows eight key placemaking themes and concepts to ensure high-quality development. In particular, a strong emphasis

on active travel and connections to the proposed and existing green infrastructure assets, including the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network. Innovation within the project also underpinned the community engagement process, with the use of virtual interactive methods of public consultation, to provide greater access and influence from nearby residents. The project team took considerable time reviewing public feedback and addressing the vast majority of comments within the masterplan framework documents, as an integral part of the masterplanning and placemaking process.

Public consultation for both Masterplan Frameworks was completed in the summer of 2020, and the Hoyland South framework has now been fully adopted by the Council.
