Student wins 2011 Gillespies Fraser Teal Award

Tom Walker of Gillespies was delighted to award the Gillespies Fraser Teal Award to Fatema Al Hammadi, who has just completed her Urban Design Masters, at Leeds Metropolitan University.

"The overall standard of work on this years Urban Design Masters programme was really exceptional, so choosing a winner was really difficult." said Tom. "But what stood out from Fatema's work was the careful response to place and the traditional vernacular of Hidd City in Bahrain, which Fatema responded to with her waterfront plans. What also stood out was the sheer comprehensiveness of the work which focused on all facets of the public realm, including shading, movement, lighting and enclosure massing. She had really left her architectural comfort zone."

Gillespies established the award to celebrate the work and life of Fraser Teal - a former Gillespies' partner and ex-student of Leeds Metropolitan University who sadly passed away in 2004.  It is awarded annually to a student who has excelled in a particular project on the Leeds Metropolitan Urban Design Masters programme.
