St Andrew Square Officially Opened

Edinburgh’s St Andrew Square was last week officially opened in a ceremony attended by Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond.

The new space has proven very popular since it first opened to the public a short while ago. At lunch times and weekends the square is particularly busy and the surrounding businesses are benefiting from the increased numbers of people spending time in the area.

Project designer Linda Curr of Gillespies says: “The design had to be very carefully considered as St Andrew Square is based in a UNESCO world heritage site. The intention was to retain the integrity of the garden as a green space and reinforce a sense of tranquillity within the context of a busy city centre environment and the design is standing up well to the numbers of people using it. Gillespies is delighted with the finished result”.

Cllr Jenny Dawe, Leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, said: "Good quality public space is so important to the fabric of the city and I'm delighted we've been able to re-open the garden to the public. This fantastic transformation is another milestone in rejuvenating our city centre to ensure Edinburgh is a dynamic, thriving and attractive place to be for many years to come".
