Shakespeare's New Place awarded Selwyn Goldsmith Award Commendation at Civic Trust Awards.

Shakespeare's New Place has received the Selwyn Goldsmith commendation for Universal Design at the 2018 Civic Trust Awards. Two commendations were given in memory of Selwyn’s wife Becky. Becky Goldsmith, who passed away in 2017, was an advocate for the Civic Trust awards programme and the principles of universal design.

The Selwyn Goldsmith Award is judged by a specially convened panel of universal design experts, to reward and promote exemplars specific to universal design.

Designed by Feilden Clegg Badley and engineers Expedition, the re-imagination of New Place - the former residence of Shakespeare for 19 years of his adult life - provides visitors with the opportunity to walk in the Bard's footsteps through a new threshold on the site of his gatehouse and trace the footprint of his family home in a contemporary landscape setting with planting design by Gillespies.

Gillespies’ re‑imagined planting design provides a creative, contemporary celebration of Shakespeare.

New Place reopened in August 2016 to mark the 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.
