RHS Garden Bridgewater to open July 2020
This July, RHS Garden Bridgewater will be opening its gates to the public. Bridgewater will be the fifth RHS garden, spanning 154-acres on the former site of Worsley New Hall in Salford.
Following the original Tom Stuart Smith masterplan and with input from a range of talented garden designers, Gillespies is delighted to be supporting the RHS coordinate the design and delivery of a diverse range of new landscapes, gardens, buildings and infrastructure at Bridgewater. These include the re-visioning of the existing 11-acre Walled Gardens, lake restoration and the creation of new woodland. In this coordination role, Gillespies has also designed a sequence of arrival spaces including a 750+ visitor car park which benefits from integrated SuDS including swales, ecological ponds and a wider landscape of over 700 newly planted trees with a rich tapestry of groundcover planting.
The RHS has also unveiled the design for the Orchard Garden, with the Grade II-listed Garden Cottage as its centrepiece, which is one of the few surviving reminders of the Worsley New Hall estate. It will be surrounded by heritage orchards, flowering meadows and planted borders to encourage pollinators. Working closely with RHS curator Marcus Chilton-Jones this Gillespies-designed garden will reference the Victorian orchard which once existed on the site, whilst providing “breathing space” and opportunities for recreation, learning and play on the journey through the Walled Gardens and the wider estate.
