Residents celebrate the official re-opening of Northumberland Park

On Saturday, August 8, the residents of Tynemouth and North Shields gathered to celebrate the official re-opening of Northumberland Park following a multi-million pound restoration project. The event coincided with the 130-year anniversary of the original opening of the park by the Duke of Northumberland on August 11, 1885.

On Tuesday, August 11, the Duchess of Northumberland will attend a ceremony to plant a commemorative tree at the park to mark the 130th anniversary of the opening of the park.

The reinvented park offers enhanced woodland areas, formal gardens and the reinstatement and restoration of a series of lost features including railings and traditional-style seating, a victorian-style bandstand and a fountain. A new community pavilion and play area has been created to support the park's long-term future.

Parks development officer Pixie Phelan commented:

"I am immensely proud of the park. I feel passionately about having such a beautiful space for people to enjoy, relax in  - a place that makes them feel better. Residents are delighted that the park is back to its very best and this is a space they are proud to be close to"
