Public realm proposals unveiled for Globe Road in Leeds

Plans to transform Globe Road in the South Bank area of Leeds, by investing £180m in a new five-acre residential neighbourhood of more than 750 homes for rent, have been submitted to Leeds City Council by the investment partnership behind Get Living PLC. The proposals unlock a redundant but highly-visible site, creating a new neighbourhood that continues the ongoing expansion of the city centre.

The application proposes eight residential buildings and a new Hub Building linked by a series of new canal-side public spaces, created by Gillespies. The granular layout of the buildings has allowed for pockets of public space to be created in-between the buildings, activated at street level by shops, bars and cafes. The spaces range from tree-lined streets and spill-out café areas to large plazas for community events. Residents will also benefit from private residential gardens and rooftop terraces.

The development will open up the site to the waterfront through the introduction of new public routes, viewing platforms and stepped seating along this stretch of the canalside, creating a truly residential-led and green neighbourhood, which opens up Globe Road to the canalside.

Subject to planning consent being granted, work will start on site in late 2019.
