Proposals submitted for Crewe’s Lyceum Square

Plans to transform Crewe's Lyceum Square into an open-air event and performance space have been put forward by Gillespies and Cheshire East Council.

The plans for 'LY2' will deliver a vibrant mixed-use space in the heart of Crewe, where locals and visitors can gather, take part in events, performances, festivals and film screenings, and enjoy the leisure uses surrounding the square all year round. The proposals will enhance the setting of the Grade II Listed Lyceum Theatre and Crewe Market Hall, establishing a cultural heart for Crewe town centre.

Colourful street furniture, planters and floor graphics will set this space apart, creating an engaging, inspiring and inclusive space for the community. An unused part of the outdoor market shed will also be developed into a 'creative centre' with repurposed shipping containers. The aim is to create a base for small emerging businesses and artists to collaborate and exhibit their work, drawing people into the town centre. A striking external stage structure will animate the square and provide a unique performance opportunity for this part of Crewe.

The vision for the Ly2 was developed with the Council and the Crewe Cultural Forum – a collaboration of more than 100 residents, organisations and businesses in Crewe.

A drop-in public engagement event will be held from 10am - 4pm on Friday, October 8 at Crewe Market Hall. The final date for submitting comments on the planning application is October 20.
