NLA Wellbeing Award for Aldgate Square

Aldgate Square has been awarded the coveted Wellbeing Prize at the 2019 New London Architecture Award. The accolade is awarded to a single project that demonstrates how good, responsible design can aid the mental and physical wellbeing of the people that use them.

Senior Associate Oliver Duguid commented;

We are proud to have helped our Client City of London to show how wellbeing is a highly valued part of public realm improvements. Realising the vision for transforming the traffic-dominated 1960s gyratory into a thriving public space was a hugely complex process and one that engaged multiple specialist services, from innovative below ground services mapping, to heritage conservation and design.

The extent of transformation demonstrates the value of public spaces in the City. It was a pleasure to be a part of the City of London team, whose emphasis on design quality and place-making was invaluable in maximising the potential of the public space, as well as defining a setting to celebrate the St. Botolph church, and the Sir John Cass Foundation Primary School.

Winning the 2019 NLA Wellbeing Award is a huge accolade for the design team. With such limited space within the city, creating spaces which can aid the mental and physical wellbeing of the people that live or work in them should be a primary focus for designers.

Aldgate Square is the largest new public space in the Square Mile and offers pocket gardens, open lawns, water features, flexible seating and café spaces. These elements combine to create a space which offers an uplifting, social and protected environment, which places people at its heart.’
