Mitcham Gasworks receives Resolution to Grant

We’re delighted to announce that the London Borough of Merton’s Planning Committee has given a Resolution to Grant for the redevelopment of Mitcham Gasworks. This ambitious residential project by St William, part of Berkeley Group, will rejuvenate the former gasworks site, which has sat dormant for over 20 years.

Designed by architects Rolfe Judd, the redevelopment will transform the former brownfield site into a vibrant neighbourhood, delivering 579 new homes alongside 2,000 square metres of dedicated play spaces, new public green spaces, amenity courtyards for residents and extensive new connectivity across the site.

Gillespies’ landscape design narrative draws inspiration from Merton’s nearby green spaces and the sinuous forms of the River Wandle, which inspired the site’s central gathering space, blending nature with dedicated play and lawn areas to create a hub of lively activity.

At the heart of this design is a captivating circular green ring that celebrates the gasholder's legacy within the landscape. This central feature includes bespoke benches incorporating repurposed rollers salvaged from the site.

Our team collaborated closely with ecologists, Ecology Solutions, to create a resilient and biodiverse planting programme for the site, including a series of biodiverse roofs designed to serve as a stepping stone landscape, providing crucial habitats and pathways for local wildlife.
