MediaCityUK Phase 2 wins planning permission of the year 2017 award

Phase 2 of MediaCityUK at Salford Quays, UK, scooped the ‘Planning Permission of the Year 2017’ at the UK Planning Awards. 

The awards recognise outstanding professional planning work in placemaking, urban design, economic development, housing regeneration, legal advice and environmental consulting.


The second phase, which secured planning consent in September last year, will see the existing MediaCityUK development – home to the BBC - more than double in size with the addition of ten new buildings, providing 540,000 square feet of office space, 1,800 new apartments, retail and leisure spaces together with an extensive public realm by Gillespies.   


Planning consultants NJL Consulting collected the award run by ‘Planning’ magazine at a prestigious ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in London on the 21st June. According to the Judge’s Report the Team’s approach to partnership working and collaboration with Salford City Council was highlighted as the key reason for the award.


Collaborating with a number of plot architects, Gillespies and Chapman Taylor worked closely with the Peel Group to develop the masterplan framework for the expansion of for this unique site. The masterplan establishes a network of new public spaces and connections that facilitate pedestrian movement across the site, linking the new buildings with the rejuvenated waterfront. The delivery of a high quality public realm will seamlessly extend and connect with the highly successful existing landscape delivered by Gillespies in the first phase.
