Green light for the first phase of St John's Neighbourhood, Manchester

The first phase of St John's, Manchester's new neighbourhood for enterprise, culture and living, was given the go-ahead by Manchester City Council last week.

A trio of sites designed by Levitt Bernstein, BuckleyGrayYeoman and SimpsonHaugh and Partners alongside a new public realm by Gillespies forms the first phase of the St John's masterplan - the transformation of the former ITV and Granada Studios into an exciting new mixed-use neighbourhood - for Allied London and Manchester City Council.

Set amongst 15 acres, St John's public realm establishes a new vertical living concept by creating a series of street and higher level public spaces - courtyards, roof gardens, parks and semi-public pocket gardens - at different scales and intimacies, creating multi-level interest and a hive of activity.

New pedestrianised streets, alleyways and vibrant green spaces create a destination with a truly distinctive sense of space that reinstates the waterside in the City and reconnects Castlefield with the Spinningfields commercial district to the North.

Allied London will commence the project in Autumn 2016.
