Green Light for Coney Street Riverside Regeneration in York
Coney Street Riverside has officially received the green light from City of York Council, marking a significant step forward in revitalising this essential part of York city centre and the previously overlooked stretch of the River Ouse.
The Coney Street Masterplan, led by the York-based property specialist Helmsley Group, will introduce 250,000 sq ft of vibrant mixed-use retail, leisure, commercial, and residential spaces. Gillespies is excited to be shaping the landscape and public realm in two zones within the masterplan (Zone 3 and 4), which will feature a new riverside walkway, an intimate courtyard garden and lush riverside gardens. At the heart of the regeneration is Waterloo Place, a significant public space designed for residents and visitors alike. This significant new public space will provide pause points to soak in river views, while also offering a flexible space for community events, food stalls, and pop-up entertainment that promises to draw crowds and boost foot traffic to Coney Street.
The development will create green public spaces and enhanced streetscapes that will enhance accessibility between Coney Street and the river, encouraging people to linger and return.
The public spaces and streetscapes will be paved with natural stone paving and setts that echo York’s historic streetscapes, while timber furniture will maintain a natural feel near the river, complemented by a planting strategy that incorporates ornamental beds filled with a mix of herbaceous species, grasses, and evergreens to soften the streetscapes.
This project promises to bring significant benefits to the City by creating spaces that reflect York's unique identity, ensuring they are personal and distinctive to the community.
Congratulations to client Helmsley Group and the wider team, including brown + company, O’Neil Associates, Montagu Evans, Aspect4 Construction, SCP and Jane Simpson Access.
