Gillespies shortlisted on Hammersmith Town Square design competition

Gillespies has been shortlisted in a design competition to create a new £1 million public square in west London.

Three firms are currently competing to design a plaza on the site of an unpopular 1960’s extension to Hammersmith Town Hall, which will be demolished as part of a masterplan for the area.

Gillespies design remains true to the practice's philosophy on creating locally distinctive spaces - the concept takes as its inspiration the water course that runs under Town Hall expressing this in the patterns and form of materials as well as the lighting. The design supports the use of the square as a new platform for urban activity, providing a stage for a variety of events that extend the enjoyment and full participation of the community from morning through to the night. A result is expected by the end of the week.
