Consultation launched for transformational Belfast Stories

The landmark Belfast Stories project has reached an exciting milestone with the launch of a 14-week public consultation, running until 23 February. The consultation will provide an opportunity for the public to shape the early concepts for this transformational £100m development, which will deliver a public space, visitor attraction and creative hub.

The project, spearheaded by Belfast City Council, will breathe new life into the iconic Art Deco Bank of Ireland building on Royal Avenue, while reimagining the surrounding 5,000m² site. Gillespies is working alongside Snøhetta and Belfast’s TODD Architects to deliver the world-class building, which includes a new rooftop park, urban events courtyard and enhanced city streetscape.

Belfast Stories is all about sharing stories from people who have lived in and visited Belfast – past and present. People will take their own journey through stories that are told in many different ways – interactive, audio-visual, musical, printed and in ways that are yet to be imagined. The creative hub will feature a story gathering initiative designed to deliver an ever-developing programme of activities both inside and outside the building – where stories gathered and made are shaped, stored and shared.

The initial designs offer a glimpse into how Belfast Stories will celebrate the city’s unique heritage, culture, and community, breathing new life into this historic part of Belfast while creating a vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike.

The project is expected to open by 2030 and the multi-purpose city centre destination will aim to attract more than 700,000 visitors per year, with up to 1,200 jobs supported during the construction and launch phases.

This public consultation marks a pivotal step forward, giving the community the chance to shape a development that will transform Belfast’s heart.
