Civic Trust Awards 2012: Gillespies project commendation

Gillespies is delighted to have received a Commendation at the 2012 Civic Trust Awards.  The award recognises our redesign of the landscape and public realm for Warrior Square Gardens in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK.

The regeneration of this key public space marks an important milestone in the revival of Southend.  From the outset of the redesign, Gillespies responded to the structure of the square's historical layout, recomposing the familiar elements of an English Garden Square, with lawn, planting beds, seating, lighting, a focal point and boundaries, but updated for contemporary use.

Proving popular with the public already since its redesign, the gardens have rejuvenated a vibrant green space in what had previously been a neglected Victorian square.

Gillespies is currently working on a range of Landscape and Public Realm schemes of various scales and settings. 2012 will see Gillespies' designs for Bradford City Park come to completion along with several other key public spaces within the UK, and for world cities including Beirut's Roman Baths.
