Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council wanted to ensure that all future public spaces within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi were of the highest quality and met the needs of its people. Our Public Realm Design Manual delivers a comprehensive guide to delivering world-class public spaces and communities.
Covering the municipalities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia, the guidance has been developed to deliver world-class public spaces and streetscapes that support healthy and happy lives for all residents across the Emirate.
The manual has been developed as a toolkit of three sections covering all aspects of the planning, design and construction of public open space, public realms and streetscapes across the Emirate. It will be used by all professionals involved in the planning, design, approval, construction, and operation of public realm projects to enhance the design quality of streets and public spaces in the Emirate.
The manual covers all typologies and hierarchies of open space with the intention of creating a world-class public realm network. In addition, it promotes best practice guidance and open space prototype designs that will complement the regulatory aspects of the manual and even provides an Estidama (Arabic for sustainability) rating system specifically for all public realm projects.
Gillespies’ scope also included producing an Open Space Framework mapped in GIS for the entire Emirate to ensure that extensive levels of open space are delivered until 2030.
