Leicester Square, London
As one of London's most visited spaces and an important national icon, the re-design of London‘s Leicester Square is nationally significant.
Gillespies‘ design response balances the preservation of the best historic elements whilst updating it for a more contemporary look and feel to make it more visually attractive. Modern technology supports the excellent design in greatly increasing the capacity and flexibility of the space. The design will accommodate seasonal changes and better adapt the square to its many uses, which will benefit both tourists and locals alike.
The mature trees will remain, with raised lawns being added beneath these to retain much of the green space. Framing this green will be a perimeter walkway of recycled glass, which uses new technology to display information to visitors to the square. At night the glass will become a solid bar of light, achieved through new lighting technology.
