Grainger Town, Newcastle
Grainger Town is the historic heart of Newcastle upon Tyne where forty percent of buildings are listed as being of historical and architectural importance. It is now a multi-award winning area, recognised nationally and internationally for its successful regeneration.
This was not always so. Before the regeneration, this once prosperous area was being overtaken by new retail and commercial activity in the late 80's and 90's which eroded the economic base, leaving properties to fall into disrepair. Resident numbers were falling and development opportunities were ignored.
To help change this, Gillespies was appointed to prepare a public realm strategy as a key component in delivering regeneration to the area. Following its successful adoption, Gillespies prepared design briefs, feasibility studies and conceptual designs for Monument, Bath Lane and Grainger Street and were retained as consultants to act as design advisors throughout the implementation of the work. The firm's contribution has since been well-recognised with awards to both the practice itself and to the project as a whole.
