Manchester Stadium and Ashton Canal Corridor

To high acclaim and national pride Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games in the summer of 2002.

So Britain can host a major sporting event after all! With over one hundred million pounds spent on new sporting infrastructures, environmental improvements and a legacy of regeneration in East Manchester, the Games were a great success. Alongside engineers Arup and Mott MacDonald, Gillespies shared in this success by delivering a landscape and public realm masterplan for the main stadium complex, Manchester Stadium. This also included the external works for the one and a half mile pedestrian link to the city centre.

In a high-pressure environment and with an immovable deadline, this high profile project was delivered both on time and to budget. The complex project required teamwork, flexibility and attention to detail and complex contractual procedures.
