Buchanan Street, Glasgow City Centre
The concept for Glasgow's main shopping street combines the engineering legacy and design aspirations of Glaswegians with the Dear Green Place that is Glasgow.
A design of radical simplicity emphasises the identity of the street by removing clutter and revealing the richness and elegance of its architecture. The design balances the unity of the street with the character and individuality of the spaces. Materials are inspired by the legacy and strength that symbolises Glasgow; resilience, durability, hardness, strength - Stone and Steel; wit, humour, celebration - Glass and Light. Light is an integral part of the overall design and plays an important part in the visual legibility of Buchanan Street after dark. It also supports the night-time economy of this area of Glasgow.
