This project to build and 'link' a cluster of five hospitals in central Manchester was as much about urban regeneration as healthcare provision.
As part of BovisLendlease's PFI consortia, Gillespies provided landscape and urban design services to oversee the successful provision of one thousand five hundred new beds on a seventeen hectare site close to the University.
The comprehensive masterplan links listed Edwardian hospitals along one of Manchester's busiest roads into a more modern and functional health care campus central to which will be a wide parkland serving to frame new buildings. This 'green lung' will be edged by new boulevards and become the second largest public realm space in the city centre. Intimate courtyards and gardens have been designed which respond to the individual needs of the different hospitals.
