In the past Britain's cities benefited from the vision of city fathers who established an urban legacy recognised around the world - beautiful but functional to serve the community and the nation.

Today, the challenge of city development is greater than ever. The creation of improved centres and new neighbourhoods must be combined with those that are disadvantaged. It requires understanding and skill to balance the creation of new places of the highest quality with the regeneration of disadvantaged areas whilst understanding the sensitivities of our environment. But this balance is necessary to create a new legacy for future generations.
