National Assembly, Cardiff
As home to the elected body that will guide legislation and policy making for the entire region, the National Assembly for Wales is a highly significant design project for Gillespies and a potent symbol for the new Wales.
The competition winning design by architect Richard Rogers Partnership aimed to celebrate this role by developing a piece of architecture that was not only innovative and memorable but that also resonated with a strong narrative that linked it directly with the site.
Situated in a spectacular setting overlooking Cardiff Bay Gillespies has built on those initial ideas by developing a Welsh slate landscape, a 'sea' that appears to rise out of the bay providing a plinth for a new public forum in turn located under the protective canopy of a floating timber clad roof – the 'sky'.
