Islay Cultural Centre
It is entirely fitting that a project aimed at breathing new life into the island's traditional culture should be given the opportunity of resuscitating a disused but prominent old community building.
The vacant former Fever Hospital near Bowmore was situated on the shores of Loch Indaal next to a wintering bird reserve. Gillespies' proposal was to extend the original building form and create an undercroft of accommodation, trebling the floor are of the existing building. Teaching Rooms and generous terraces offer dramatic views from the Centre over the sea loch below.
The building form of the original hospital in retained while the modern extension opens up the building to light and views.
