View project intro

Located alongside the Grand Union Canal, Paddington Basin is a new waterside quarter in west London.

The public realm strategy creates a new quarter with a distinct identity, assisted through the careful application of street materials: paving, roads, footpaths, cycleways, lighting, planting, street furniture and signage.

The strategy identified the key streets and spaces, links and nodes, and identified a common vocabulary, shared by the team to ensure consistency and homogeneity.

The subsequent implementation of the major spaces, quayside areas, streets and highways has provided the emerging quarter with a visually rich landscape of carefully selected high-quality materials.

"Gillespies was able to deliver a quality design on programme and initiated cost engineering exercises to keep within the budget [for the Paddington Basin project]. Gillespies’ experience, commitment and deliverables will stand them in good stead and indeed the practice would be considered for other landscaping schemes by Mace and the clients, Chelsfield and Pearcroft."
